Overview

The Costume Draper is primarily responsible for a portion of draping, cutting, alteration and construction activities within the Costume Shop, working collaboratively with designers and costume faculty to successfully realize the costume designer’s specifications. The Costume Draper also provides mentoring and hands-on training in costume alteration and construction to students. Through research, innovation, and instruction in new technologies and techniques the Costume Draper helps to build the future of the arts by educating, training and presenting the next generation of artists and creative innovators.
Costume Production

Meet with designers and the Costume Shop Manager to discuss patterning and construction plans.
Assist with planning for materials and personnel needs in order to complete costumes on time and within budget.
Create mockups for individual fittings consistent with designers’ renderings.
Alter patterns after first fitting in a manner consistent with the designer’s notes to create a finished garment.
Cut costumes from fabric selected by the designer.
Prepare pieces for student assistants to assemble and personally assemble and stitch more complex costumes as assigned.
This position makes recommendations to the Costume Shop Manager concerning the outsourcing of crafts projects that cannot be accommodated in the shop.
Maintain standards of construction consistent with highest professional standard
Maintain clear and effective communication in support of the build process including but not limited to draper meeting notes, as well as following up on fitting notes and dress rehearsal notes with the designer and Costume Shop Manager

Supervision

Supervise, monitor and evaluate the progress and performance of student workers.

Planning and Scheduling

Meet with Shop Staff and Costume Shop Manager to discuss weekly goals and construction plans.
Assist with planning for personnel needs in order to complete costumes within agreed schedules and budgets.
Communicate construction plans and schedules with Costume Shop Manager and faculty.
Collaborate with Costume Shop Coordinator and Costume Shop Manager to distribute workload assignments to contingent labor, student labor and students working for class credit

Health & Safety

Maintain a safe work environment and safety procedures for The Clarice by maintaining certifications and trainings as necessary pertaining to the work of The Clarice production department.
Coordinate training and inspections related to the safe operation of all backstage equipment and facilities.
Oversee and support a safe and effective work environment.
Actively work to avoid any situation that would create an unsafe work environment.
Act as a Safety Officer for the Production department as requested.

Instruction

Actively engage/train/mentor students through frequent interaction that motivates them to succeed and conveys an enthusiasm for their learning. Further their research ideas by providing the resources necessary for discovery.
Guide students in active collaboration and the application of their learning in problem and project based learning demonstrations.
Lead effective communication between academic partner faculty, students, and staff to achieve desired instructional goals.
Participate in academic curriculum develop as necessary to further the instructional goals of all Clarice partners.
Create an effective assessment of a student’s work, clear instructional guidelines, and to acknowledge a student’s accomplishments.
Maintain and ensure that there is an inclusive environment for students to learn in. This includes actively creating opportunities for all students regardless of their physical abilities, age, sex, race, religion, and gender identity or expression.
Prepare and instruct students on current safety practices and standards.

List physical demands of position:
Must be able to lift and manipulate objects up to 50 lbs; to manipulate equipment, tools, and supplies and/or exert force up to 50 lbs. Must be able to work in hazardous or irritating environments, confined spaces, and to wear and work in personal protective equipment.
High School Diploma or GED.
Five years progressively responsible experience to include at least one year in a lead or supervisory capacity.
OTHER: Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.
Qualifications
Minimum

High School Diploma or GED.
Five years progressively responsible experience to include at least one year in a lead or supervisory capacity.
OTHER: Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.

Preferred

Bachelor’s, Masters or MFA in performing arts or related field.
Experience in a complex performing arts setting preferred.
Experience working in an educational environment and/or teaching.
Experience in costume design or coordination.
Knowledge of current practices and procedures in professional performing arts costume shops.
Familiarity with current performing arts equipment and technologies.
Excellent communication, organization and management skills.
Advanced skills in costume construction including corsetry.
Experience in supervision of costume construction teams.
Experience running fittings for Theatre, Opera and Dance.
Experience and knowledge of Costume and Fashion history.
Ability to read and interpret costume renderings.
